What’s one thought or idea you can share with your network, based on your own experience?
This week I am sharing three videos that explain who I am, one idea I can share with my network, and who it is I seek to serve. This is the second of the three videos. In this video, I note that you need to take on responsibility when it’s offered to you, and back yourself to perform if you are offered those opportunities. The person who gets the job is quite often the person who wants it the most. Because you can always learn processes, but one thing you can’t be taught is drive and passion. #CRE #commercialrealestate #success
Parasite wins best picture - what are the lessons for business success?
What can we learn from this year’s Academy Awards? The front runner (“1917”) fell short and a non-English language film won Best Picture for the first time ever. As Lee Jung Eun of “Parasite” said when accepting the best picture Oscar: never be complacent and keep pushing. Also, the Academy’s voters are starting to reflect the D&I values which commercial real estate has embraced in recent years. There were more culturally diverse winners and acknowledgement of women’s contributions to cinema throughout the ceremony. I must apologise for mispronouncing Taika Waititi’s name in this video (I said Waikiki) - I practiced it correctly before filming, but it came out wrong under the bright lights, and I don't have a big movie studio budget to dub over it. As someone with a regularly mispronounced surname, and a huge fan of “Jojo Rabbit”, I should have got it right first time! All in all, I was happy with Hollywood’s night of nights and was pleased to see some riskier productions emerge victorious. The importance of being magnanimous in business
I first received advice on the importance of being magnanimous from a mentor in the commercial real estate sector about 5 years ago, just before I moved into a bigger leadership role, and I’ve tried to remember his great advice ever since. In this video, I share a recent story about how putting magnanimity into practice can work for anyone – even if you’re not in a leadership role. Discussing free ice cream samples in New York before going to the taping of The Late Show!!
What does free ice cream 🍨 in New York 🌃 have to do with commercial real estate? 🤷🏻♂️ I’ve noticed that when you ask to taste a flavour of ice cream before you pick your flavour (or in my case, flavours!), you get a much bigger spoon dip here compared to back home, where they give you just a little taste. It’s been consistently true in three ice cream shops I’ve been to on this visit (yes, I eat ice cream everyday)!! I think providing decent-sized samples demonstrates a commitment to customer centricity that we can learn from. Instead of worrying about the cost of a few free samples, shops are focused on making sure the customer is satisfied with their decision. In CRE, when we empower clients to make better decisions that they’re happy with, we help them to move forward with confidence. Now, it’s time to settle in for the taping of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert! #commercialrealestate #cre #success #customerexperience
Quarantine or self-isolation due to COVID-19/Coronavirus health rules!
17 March 2020 I have been quarantined for 14 days!!! No, I don't have COVID-19, but I did arrive in Australia from overseas yesterday, so I am required to self-isolate under the Australian Government's strict (and evolving) pandemic control laws. That's why this video was filmed on my balcony at home (and why I haven't shaved since last week!). If you have any tips for how to deal with quarantine, please share your thoughts in the comments below...because more of us may face this situation soon! Today, I am sharing a video about why, under the current circumstances, it is important to be a bit more patient when clients take longer than usual to respond. Also, given you may have more time on your hands, and it is certainly not BAU, you may want to use this opportunity to broaden your horizons outside your usual comfort zone - thereby showing another dimension of yourself to your clients and peers. If you're working from home, rather than focusing on the limitations, consider the new opportunities that now present themselves. #CRE #success #commercialrealestate
The 2020 Proeprty Council of Australia Mentoring Program
Mentoring isn’t just for mentees. As a newly installed mentor in the Property Council of Australia’s 2020 Mentoring Program, and an existing mentor within JLL‘s internal mentoring program, I know mentors benefit from mentoring by: 1️⃣ growing their own leadership skills in a new setting, 2️⃣ developing new relationships, and 3️⃣ gaining that special feeling that comes from helping others. On the other hand, I have personally benefited as the mentee of some great leaders over the first 18 years of my commercial real estate career. Based on my experience, having a mentor from either a different geography or another service line provided me with a fresh perspective that often gave me the edge to progress my career. As I know the great impact mentors can have, I am excited by the opportunity to help others in a formal mentoring capacity that is outside the confines of a direct reporting relationship structure. It would be great to hear how mentoring has positively impacted your career, if you are comfortable with sharing. Also, if you can nominate the skills that you think are most important for a mentor to possess, it would benefit me and another 59 newly installed mentors (along with their mentees, too)!!
